Distinguished guests, members of the Class of 2024, parents, friends and colleagues,
As the Chairperson of the HKUST(GZ) Governing Board and the President of HKUST, I stand before you with immense joy as we gather to celebrate a significant milestone — the inaugural Graduation Ceremony of HKUST(GZ).
When we first decided to establish a new university in the Greater Bay Area, our vision was to bring our world class programs and international outlook to the Chinese mainland. Since opening its doors just two years ago, HKUST(GZ) has not only fulfilled this ambition but also emerged as a preeminent institution in the region.
Today, I am honored to celebrate the achievements of our first group of graduating students. Graduates, my heartfelt congratulations to all of you. During your two-year journey here, you have interacted with faculty from the world’s finest institutions, undertaken advanced research using cutting-edge technologies and facilities, and participated in various cross-campus activities alongside your peers at HKUST. Your rigorous academic training, in a dynamic environment of innovation and discovery, has prepared you to excel in an ever-changing global landscape. You are now the leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs our country urgently needs to drive progress and shape a brighter future.
HKUST(GZ) is the world’s first university to experiment with an innovative academic structure. By substituting Schools and Departments with Hubs and Thrusts, the University focuses on interdisciplinary learning to foster creativity and critical thinking - essential qualities for developing innovative solutions to humanity’s most pressing challenges. Here, we adopt a student-centered, discovery-driven approach to learning, to empower our students to break free from conventional thinking.
HKUST(GZ)’s innovative academic framework and approach to talent development perfectly complement our disciplinary approach at HKUST. Together, our two campuses embody the university of the future. Faculty and students at HKUST and HKUST(GZ) collaborate closely in education, research, and knowledge transfer to push the boundaries of research, actualize research findings, and address global challenges. Our two campuses are guided by our visionary “Unified HKUST, Complementary Campuses” framework that enables us to synergize our strengths and resources to create a vibrant environment where faculty and students can thrive, and ideas can flourish.
HKUST(GZ) is also deeply committed to driving positive change through innovation and social responsibility, striving to cultivate leaders who are not only academically accomplished but also socially conscious. Graduates, you are now part of a new generation of leaders and change-makers. Your education has prepared you to lead with purpose, to inspire others, and to help build a more sustainable and inclusive world.

The Greater Bay Area is one of China’s most vibrant and open regions, and the heart of the nation’s development strategy. As a hub for innovation, technology development, and international collaboration, this dynamic region offers unparalleled opportunities. Graduates, here you will find opportunities to pursue your dreams, unleash your talents, and transform your ideas to action. Your contributions will have the power to shape not only your own futures but also the future of our society.
Graduates, your journey with HKUST(GZ) does not end today. Although you are about to leave the University, the bonds you have created with each other and your alma mater will keep you forever connected to the HKUST family. Always remember we are One-HKUST! As you step into the world, carry with you the values that have shaped your journey here — integrity, perseverance, and a can-do spirit.
